Oma Sue's Blog

Hi – I’m Sue Reyzlik. I recently realized my life-long dream of building a writing hut in the backyard. The writing hut serves as a creative space and home office for Oma Publishing. This blog will be intermingled with family history, varied experiences and insights on being a Grandma (Oma), creating my special backyard space, as well as, my “retirement” career as a self-publisher of children’s stories. And perhaps a little bit on the 32 years I served as Executive Director for Keep Fremont Beautiful and the wonderful people who are sharing this adventure.

Last month I posted a blog entry about how I make my own laundry detergent.  At that time, I think I said something about maybe posting something about my sage infused vinegar cleaner thingy.  Well - I've taken some pictures of the process and I'm ready to share.
Just FYI - There are lots of good recipes for homemade cleaners online and I suggest you check out those recipes to figure out which concoctions best suit your needs.  Right now, in this day and age of sanitizing to ward off the COVID-19 virus,  I would recommend following the advice of professionals and stick with bleach, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide for their virus killing qualities.  But if you need a good everyday household cleaner, then I would definitely recommend Sage Vinegar.

OK - Step One - Grow a bunch of Sage.

Step Two - Pick the Sage and wad it up and stuff it in a jar.

Step Three - Pour vinegar over the sage and seal the jar.

Step Four - Put the sealed vinegar/sage jar in a cool dark place and forget about it.

Step Five - Six weeks to two months later remember that you were infusing vinegar with sage and retrieve the jar from it's hiding place.   Strain the leaves from the vinegar and now you have sage infused vinegar.  Easy!

Step Six - Pour equal amounts of vinegar and water into a spray bottle and you are ready to clean.

I like how the sage vinegar cleaner doesn't stink.  So many household cleaners contain dangerous chemicals - or at least dangerous to me.  The actual chemicals irritate my sinuses and lungs - as do their overly perfumed scents!  I can clean with sage vinegar without creating the conditions for a debilitating migraine.

NOTE:  Sage Vinegar works great for cleaning mirrors and windows.  Soapy water works well at killing germs and the vinegar rinse makes it even cleaner and shinier.   Keep cleaning and stay healthy!
