Oma Sue's Blog

Hi – I’m Sue Reyzlik. I recently realized my life-long dream of building a writing hut in the backyard. The writing hut serves as a creative space and home office for Oma Publishing. This blog will be intermingled with family history, varied experiences and insights on being a Grandma (Oma), creating my special backyard space, as well as, my “retirement” career as a self-publisher of children’s stories. And perhaps a little bit on the 32 years I served as Executive Director for Keep Fremont Beautiful and the wonderful people who are sharing this adventure.

The Shed in Winter – The Fortress of Seclusion

I made the correct decision in putting the shed near the back door! With this year’s snow storms, there is no way I could have shoveled a path to the back corner of the lot. Those few feet from house to shed are more than sufficient in creating the Fortress of Seclusion.
By the way - I didn’t come up with that name “Fortress of Seclusion”. I was on Facebook earlier today and my memories popped up. One of the memories was a comic strip I shared from Bloom County by Berkeley Breathed. A year ago, Opus was having some “Lair” problems and he wasn’t fitting very well into his latest attempt at creating a suitable lair – in a mailbox. His big old schnoz was sticking out of the box which was pretty funny.
Suffice it to say, there was a lot more to the continuing saga surrounding Opus creating the perfect lair. However, in the final panel of this comic strip, on this day, one year ago, on the side of the mailbox lair, was scrawled “Fortrus of Seclushun”.  This would make a great sign on my shed – what with the knee-high drifts of snow blocking the path of any would be trespassers.
I have every intention of naming my shed and making a sign for my shed. I have come up with a ton of ideas and friends have suggested more, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet.
Snow or no snow – Fortrus of Seclushun or Fortress of Seclusion has now been added to the list!  I won’t be calling my lair a “she shed” but I welcome other suggestions. The Writing Hut and Writing Shed are too easy and so is The Dream Shed and Dog House – you need to come up with something different. Maybe I need seasonal signs – one each for summer, spring, fall and winter. Leave a comment on what you think I should name my shed.
