Oma Sue's Blog

Hi – I’m Sue Reyzlik. I recently realized my life-long dream of building a writing hut in the backyard. The writing hut serves as a creative space and home office for Oma Publishing. This blog will be intermingled with family history, varied experiences and insights on being a Grandma (Oma), creating my special backyard space, as well as, my “retirement” career as a self-publisher of children’s stories. And perhaps a little bit on the 32 years I served as Executive Director for Keep Fremont Beautiful and the wonderful people who are sharing this adventure.

Repurposing in the Writing Shed

Here’s a peak inside my writing shed and information on some of my repurposing projects – enjoy!

The Day Bed
I like repurposing.  If a discard can be made into something new, I’m all for it.  One repurposing project that was perfect for my writing shed was the day bed that my son-in-law Colby made for me by re-using an old door.
The shed is tiny but the old door we picked out fit exactly right. Colby built the base and the large drawer is a pullout trundle bed. I envisioned my grandsons spending nights in the shed but so far, they haven’t felt like it. The writing shed might be a tad bit too much “Shabby Oma” for the boys!
After Colby installed the bed, I painted it and sanded down the edges.  I had planned on doing some more embellishments but I liked how it looked so I left it.  I have two sets of cushions for the day bed – one set is red and the other set is a light tan.  I switch them out when the mood strikes.
The day bed is a wonderful spot to put my legs up and type away on my laptop.  If I get tired, I scoot down and take a nap.

The Cupboard Doors
A friend had done some remodeling in his home and asked if I wanted a couple of cupboard doors.  This was before the shed had been built and I didn’t know what I would use them for, but I wasn’t going to let him give them to someone else!  I took them.
When it came time to build the shed, I asked Colby to make the windows the right size to fit the cupboard doors.  There would be one window by the front door and three on the rear corner of the shed.  I thought the cupboard doors would look good framing the window on the front of the house.
I painted the cupboard doors the same base coat as the ship lap on the walls.  Then I added some of my embellishments.
The three other windows have flamingo fabric curtains and look great coming into the shed.  When you sit down facing the door, that window with the cupboards and lace curtain looks so cute.
The lace curtain is actually a lace table cloth that I repurposed.

Repurposing Stuff
During my time at Keep Fremont Beautiful, we encouraged people to repurpose, recycle and upcycle. KFB still promotes those things and for me it has become a way of life – almost an addiction!
When I started this website, I began thinking of repurposing projects that I could offer in the store and a book bag made from denim jeans seemed like a good idea. I am not much of a seamstress but I do know how to sew.
I went to my sister-in-law Eileen (who is a professional seamstress) and asked for some guidance. Eileen and I were able to figure out the easiest way for “us” to make a book bag. I think they are cute and here are a couple of samples of the bags we designed and produced.
